Alistair MacLeod Award
Alistair MacLeod joined the teaching staff of Airdrie Academy in the early 60s. He had a great interest in amateur operatics and in 1963 produced Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial By Jury as part of the school’s annual concert. This was met with such enthusiasm that full scale Gilbert and Sullivan productions became a firm part of the school curriculum.
Alistair played a part in the planning of the then new Caldervale High School and was instrumental in the inclusion of a community theatre within the building. He then took up a promoted post at that school when it opened, going on to be Head Teacher.
On his departure from Airdrie Academy, former pupils took the opportunity of forming an operatic club in 1973, now known as Monklands Light Opera, with Alistair as Producer. He performed this task on a voluntary basis until retiring from the post after the 1983 production. He then continued his interest and support in the role of Honorary President.
Encouragement and support of young people in the theatrical arts was always one of his great interests and he would be very proud that this award has been commissioned in his name.
Monklands Light Opera are honoured to be presenting this award in his memory to honour a MLO Youth student who has achieved success, shown focus and determination all year and has gone out their way to make a difference within MLO Youth.
We are delighted to be presenting the very first MLO Youth Alistair MacLeod Memorial Award to Calum McGonigle.
Calum is a very kind and caring young man who has been incredibly focused and committed this year, not only to his part in learning lines and lyrics to music, but also to MLO Youth off stage.
He has unconsciously taken on a leadership role this year by supporting new members. He takes them under his wing and encourages them to come out of their shell. He often goes out his way to ensure that everyone is included and no one is left out.
Nothing is ever too much trouble for Calum and he attacks every task and challenge with a great attitude and 100% effort.
